In general the European species are fairly easily grown though perhaps not the most impressive. L. rhodopeum (below) from the Greek/Bulgarian border is a notable exception as is the beautiful L. candidum or Madonna Lily.
They occur across parts of Europe from Spain to Bulgaria with the well-known L. martagon having a range extending across Russia and into northern China. There are no species native to Britain but this picture shows L. pyrenaicum naturalised on a field bank in Cornwall.
